THE LUMINOUS TRILOGY
The Luminous series is a fake young adult Sci-Fi series with a tongue-in-cheek wryness about the weird world of cyborgs, spaceships, and galactic religious dystopia, never taking the setting quite seriously while still giving the characters heavy-hitting emotional arcs and a dramatic, gripping plot.
The unusual tonal combination is reflected on the covers: beginning with the first in the series, ethereal, sparkling, feminine colors and textures contrast with a very sleek, tactile-looking black robot arm. For the primary typography, sci-fi conventions of futuristic type or illustration-driven covers are upended in order to marry it more closely to the fantasy genre using a decorative vintage typeface. The upward slant suggests the dynamism and movement of the fast-paced action in the book itself.

THE RAVEN BOYS COVER REDESIGN
The Raven Boys is a (real) contemporary fantasy YA series about the supernatural exploits of a group of high school friends. For my refresh, I took the public domain images of the Rider-Waite tarot deck (one of the oldest and most iconic sets of tarot art still in use) and created a collage that would highlight themes and imagery from the book (tarot itself being one of them). I entered this design in an informal contest held by the author and tied for first place.
